Rodent Proofing Your Property
Inside and Out

Over the last month or so we have received calls from concerned residents about seeing rats on or near their property.
Here are some tips to help residents keep unwanted visitors away from their homes and yards.

Inside

1. Inspect your basement and house for cracks and holes. Seal them with mortar. Rodents can slip through holes as small as a dime.

2. Make sure you have screens on your basement windows. Repair holes and tears.

3. Keep outside doors closed. Use metal trim to prevent rodents from gnawing and entering underneath.

4. Don't leave extra pet food out. Store food in a plastic, metal or glass container with a tight-fitting lid.

5. Clean up food and crumbs. Don't store food in lower cabinets.

Outside

1. Keep trash in heavy plastic or metal containers with tight-fitting lids.

2. Place trash outside shortly before pick-up time. Do not leave plastic bags outside overnight.

3. Keep yard free of weeds, trash and debris, so rats and mice don't have shelter or food.

4. Don't leave pet foods and waste outside.

5. Clutter attracts rodents. Dispose of unused building materials, boxes and yard waste promptly. Store lumber off the ground   on a rack with clean, open space underneath.

6. Keep all vegetation 2 to 3 feet away from walls. Cut grass frequently to eliminate hiding places. Remove all standing water.

7. Trim shrubs and trees regularly so branches do not touch the ground.

8. Clean up fallen fruit and seeds regularly so rats can't eat them.

Household Hazardous Waste Acceptance Site
County Adds Two New Collection Days For Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling

LARGO, MD – The Prince George’s County Department of Environmental Resources (DER) announces the addition of two new collection days at the Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Acceptance Sites.

County citizens and residents may now take their home-generated hazardous waste and old computers/electronics to the Household Hazardous Waste and Electronics Recycling Acceptance Sites on Thursdays and Fridays from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., as well as on the current collection day of Sunday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.  Only non-commercial vehicles are allowed at the acceptance sites, which are located at the Brown Station Road Sanitary Landfill, 11611 White House Road in Upper Marlboro.

“By expanding the number of collection days, we will provide greater accessibility for citizens and residents to recycle their electronics equipment and to dispose of their household hazardous waste in an environmentally safe manner,” said DER Director Donna M.P. Wilson, Esq.

For a list of acceptable items collected at the acceptance sites, contact DER’s Recycling Section at

In Case of Emergency (ICE)

Paramedics will turn to a victim's cell phone for clues to that persons identity. You can make their job much easier with a simple idea that they are trying to get everyone to adopt: ICE.

ICE stands for In Case of Emergency. If you add an entry in the contacts list in your cell phone under ICE, with the name and phone number of the person that the emergency services should call on your behalf, you can save them a lot of time and have your loved ones contacted quickly. It only takes a few moments of your time to do.

Paramedics know what ICE means and they look for it immediately. ICE your cell phone NOW!

Special Note about Refrigerators

When putting out refrigerators for bulk trash pick-up, remember you must first REMOVE THE DOORS! Refrigerators pose a real hazard to small children who may suffocate after climbing into them and getting trapped.

Nine Reasons You Should Plant Trees

1.    Trees conserve energy in the summer, and save you money. Properly planted trees can         cut your air-conditioning costs by 15-35%.

2.    Trees help clean the air. Trees produce the oxygen we breathe, and remove air pollution by lowering air temperature, through respiration, and by retaining particulates.

3.    Trees bring songbirds close by. Birdsong will fill the air as trees provide nesting sites, food, and cover for countless species.

4.    Trees around your home can increase its value by up to 15% or more. Studies of comparable houses with and without trees place a markedly higher value on those whose yards are sheltered by trees.

5.    Trees help clean our rivers and streams. Trees hold the soil in place and reduce polluted runoff into our waterways.

6.    Trees conserve energy in the winter. Trees can slow cold winter winds and cut your heating costs 10-20%.

7.    Trees fight global warming. They remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the major contributor to the threat of global warming. Trees planted near our homes and in our communities moderate temperatures and reduce the need for air conditioning and heating produced by burning fossil fuels, a major source of excess atmospheric carbon dioxide.

8.    Trees make your home, and your neighborhood, more beautiful. Trees mark the changing of the seasons, and add grace and seasonal color. Trees make a house feel like a home.

9.    Trees are fun! Planting and caring for trees can be a great family and community activity.
