                                                                           Letter From the Mayor
    The participation of Town residents and others who came out to last months' Town Meeting to pay tribute to former Town of Landover Hills Police Officer, Cpl. Pete Jensen, who resigned after more than six years of service to the Town, was very commendable. A word of thanks to everyone who participated, including Maryland Senator Paul Pinsky, who spoke at last months' Town Meeting and presented Cpl. Jensen with a Proclamation from the Maryland Senate. Other tributes to Cpl. Jensen included a Resolution read by the Mayor from the Mayor and Council acknowledging Cpl. Jensen's accomplishments and thanking him for his service; in addition he received an award from Town of Landover Hills Police Chief Henry Norris and the Landover Hills Police Department.
 

    The annual Town of Landover Hills Halloween Party held on Friday, October 29, 1999 was a great success; everyone who participated apparently had a fine time. A word of thanks to Town Manager Kathy Tavel and Administrative Assistant Juanita Hood, who decorated Town Hall and coordinated the Halloween party activities. Thanks also go out to Councilmembers Mike Thompson, Bill Kley and Mrs. Kley, Roderick Kennedy, Mrs. Motta, Shirley Weatherspoon, Betty Schenk, Danny Hulbert, Chief Henry Norris and the Landover Hills Police Department and Landover Hills Public Works staff member Robert Frazier, who was disc jockey, and the Public Works staff, in addition to everyone else who played a part in the success of the occasion.
 

    As a further word concerning U.S. Census 2000, everyone is urged to cooperate and participate in the census effort. Landover Hills Town Hall will be utilized as a training site for persons who will be working with the census.
 

    The increasing population of cats in Town has become a matter of concern to a number of residents. All residents who own cats and dogs are urged to please be considerate of your neighbors; and insure that all regulations regarding pets are followed.
 

    We look forward to your participation at the upcoming Town Meeting on Monday, November 15, 1999 at 7:30 p.m.

Bus Shelters- The Mayor and Council reviewed the contract from Culver Amherst regarding the construction of bus shelters. It was noted that many of the changes made to the contract by former Town Attorney Louis Franke were ignored. Mayor Walker will again be contacting the company about the contract.

Gypsy Moths- A letter was received from the State of Maryland, Dept. of Agriculture, that stated eight (8) gypsy moth egg mass surveys were completed in Landover Hills and that no egg masses were found.
 

Street Work- Town Manager Kathleen Tavel stated that she had talked to Ed Jankewisc from the Prince George's County Department of Public Works and was informed that all street work for the Town would begin in the Spring.
 
 
 
 
 

                                            Halloween Thanks
A special thanks to all the businesses who contributed to make this years' Halloween Party a success.

Hampton Nursery, Landover Hills Shell, 5-12, Giant Food, David's Liquors, Baltimore Orioles, Chesapeake Children's Museum, Maryland Science Center, Herbert Wells Ice Rink, Fairland Aquatics Center, AMF Bowling Center and Dominos's Pizza.
 

Additional thanks to: Administrative Assistant Juanita Hood who was instrumental in obtaining all of our donations and keeping the activities going throughout the party;
 

Robert Frazier, Public Works, who is the Town's very own "Music Man". We thank him for another year of great music and fun.
 

Annie Hood (Juanita's daughter) who made the banner at the front of Town clarifying when Trick or Treating would be held.
 

PFC Mike Renfro for helping out with the party on his day off.
 

Clay Anderson, Leo Benjamin, James Ford and Larry Cokley who helped with music, contests and cleaning up.
 

The rest of the LHPD, Chief Norris, for helping out with the party, Cpl. Frank Borelli for picking up pizzas and to Corporals Rackey and Borelli for patrolling the streets while the rest of us were having fun!
 
 

According to the American Red Cross each home should have certain essential items ready for any emergency. Since the Year 2000computer glitch may cause temporary power outages during a cold winter month, providing emergency planning for your home may prove to be very worthwhile. Please find below some suggestions for what every home should have:
 

1. Water- Store one gallon of water per person per day and keep enough for three days.

2. Food- Store a three day supply of non-perishable food items.

3. First Aid Kit- prepare a first aid kit that includes all the essentials such as band aids, peroxide, etc.

4. Tools and Supplies- Know your mechanical abilities and your home. Assemble tools in a convenient location.

5. Clothing and Bedding-Assemble a supply of blankets, warm clothes, or other necessary items. Plan ahead, if you have a child or spouse that is always cold, provide that individual with enough layers to keep warm.

6. Special Items- Children and the elderly may require special items such as inhalers or daily medicine. Also, you may want to gather important family documents, such as social security cards or birth certificates in one central location. Finally if you have children you may want to include some entertainment items to help them pass the time.
 

Once you have all the items inplace, consider a planning meetingwith your family where you discuss what steps to take in an emergency, or where important documents or phone numbers are kept.

Congratulations to Bobbi and Dan Takemori of 71^st Avenue on the birth of their first child. Dylan Conor Takemori was born on October 13, 1999, weighing 8 pounds. He is the first Grandchild of Vice-Mayor Jeannette Ripley and her husband Robert and the first Great Grand child of Mrs. Fran Motta.
 

Congratulations to Donna and Henry David on the birth of their second son. Andrew Lee David was born on October 19, 1999, weighing in at 10 lbs 2 ounces.

1. All leaves must be BAGGED and placed curbside for Monday Yard Waste Pick-up.
 

2. Take a few extra minutes while raking and rake the curb line. Leaves in the street can be hazardous in wet weather.
 

3. Check the exterior of your house for last minute winterizing. Touch up bare wood to help protect it during the cold and wet weather.

Thanksgiving is fast approaching. Please allow your police department to share some safety tips to help protect you, your children and your hard earned dollars.
 

Generally, Thanksgiving is the most traveled holiday of the year and the beginning of the holiday shopping season. People will be traveling locally and throughout the United States to visit shopping centers, relatives, etc. Criminals will be looking to take advantage of those who are not being cautious. Some helpful hints could prevent you from being a victim.
 

1. When leaving your home, either visiting, shopping, or going away, ensure all doors and windows are locked.
 

2. Arrange to have mail picked up or stopped if your stay is longer than usual.
 

3. Make your home appear lived in, such as lights on timers and have your police department arrange for a house check.
 

4. While shopping, park in a lighted area as close to busy entrances as possible.
 

5. Put packages into the trunk. DO NOT leave out items that will spark the bad guys interest in your property.
 

6. Put your purse (if you must carry it) over your shoulder, and under your jacket if you are wearing one.
 

7. If you are carrying money, please put wallets and cash inside front pockets.
 

8. Only carry the amount of cash you need to purchase the items you are shopping for. Criminals watch for shoppers that display a lot of money on them, or what appears to be a lot of cash.
 

9. Only carry one or two credit cards, and conceal your card numbers from others near you, and ask for all carbon copies and destroy them.
 

10. Be aware of individuals around you, try not to be distracted, and always appear confident and alert with your surroundings. Take extra time and plan to leave early.
