I would like to begin by extending a word of thanks to all Town of Landover Hills residents who participated in the 2005 Town election; in addition to the residents who served as election judges for the event (Mrs. Joyce L. Walker, First Lady; Mrs. Frances Motta, Mrs. N. Claire Robison and Mrs. Eva Jean Richardson).
 

Congratulations to the newly elected Town Councilmembers, Sara Washington, representing Ward 1 and Michael Walker representing Ward 2; Congratulations are also extended to Councilmember Michael Thompson on his re-election as Ward 3 representative. The reorganized Town of Landover Hills Neighborhood Watch Program held its second meeting on Thursday, May 28, 2005 at 7 p.m. A word of thanks to all of the participants; Mrs. Tracey Wyche-Atkinson, coordinator of the event, Mrs. Joyce L. Walker, Councilmember Michael Thompson, Mrs. Sheila Skinner, Mr. C. Arthur Blair, Mrs. Teresa Blair, Officer Max Cayard of the Landover Hills Police Department and Mr. Ken Laurey, Deputy Director, of the Prince George's County Community Relations Office.
 

Mr. C. Arthur Blair has developed a Neighborhood Survey which is currently being circulated throughout the Town. All residents are asked to complete this survey and return it to the Landover Hills Town Hall, 6904 Taylor Street, as soon as possible. The next Landover Hills Neighborhood Watch Meeting will be on Thursday, June 23, 2005 at 7:00 p.m.
 

The Landover Hills Day 60^th Anniversary celebration committee will hold a meeting on Friday, July 1, 2005 at Town Hall. The time of the meeting will be 7 p.m. All residents who agreed to work on the Town of Landover Hills Day 60^th Anniversary Celebration Committee and all others who wish to help in this great event are asked to be present at the upcoming meeting.

The Town of Landover Hills will celebrate its 60^th Anniversary on September 10, 2005. It was thought that giving both old and new residents a glimpse into the history of the Town would give everyone a greater appreciation of the Town's journey throughout the years.
 

Monroe Warren donated 14 acres to the Prince George's County Board of Education to be used as a building site for a school. This was the first such parcel of land to be donated for a school. Buyers were told where the school would be built but no one realized the problems and obstacles to be overcome before this would become a reality. An informal census was taken to determine the number of school age children in the area. This had to be repeated several times until the plans for the school were on the drawing board. Federal funds used to assist in the building of schools became unavailable. Political representatives were contacted to give assistance. The Citizen's Association formed a school committee which met with school officials and presented the results of the census. Eventually the Board of Education informed the Association that it recognized the need for a school in Landover Hills, but the war delayed construction for many years.
 

Elementary school children continued to attend school in Bladensburg and Lanham, but in 1942 some of these children were transferred to Ardmore Elementary School. Parents were extremely dissatisfied with the move for a variety of reasons, including health and safety. Some parents removed their children from school. A delegation of 35 parents requested a meeting with the superintendent of schools. After a lengthy discussion of grievances the superintendent rose from his seat and told the group to get their children back in school by Monday or they would find themselves in jail. The group said, "So do it." The very next week a letter was received by the parent delegation informing them that a room was being renovated at the Bladensburg Primary School. The room was bright and cheerful and an excellent teacher, Mrs. Mudd, was assigned to teach the children. By 1946 it became apparent that the Landover Hills school would be a reality. Funds were available and plans had been drawn. There were revisions in plans and discussions on name and other matters, but on March 6, 1949, Landover Hills Elementary School was dedicated. By this time many of those children from the early years were in Junior and Senior High School.

Congratulations to Jessie Manuel of 72^nd Avenue on her graduation from Parkdale High School with Honors. She has received a $5000 scholarship that will enable her to get an Associates Degree from Prince George's Community College. Jessie's major will be in Political Science and her goal is to be a Social Studies teacher.
 

Congratulations to Emily Tavel on her graduation from Eleanor Roosevelt High School on May 31, 2005. She will be attending Salisbury University in the Fall and hopes to major in Biology.
 

Our Sympathies are extended to the family of Sterlin (Pappy) E. Tavel who passed away on June 8, 2005. The father of Michael Tavel of Beall Street and brother of LaDonna Tavel Sulima of 71^st Avenue. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Ella, 7 children, 18 grandchildren and 2 great grandchildren. He will be greatly missed.

Vacation Time - Summer is fast approaching and many of you will be going on vacation. When you leave for vacation whether it's a short trip or a lengthy one, please call the police department at 301-773-6400 to request a house check while you are away. We would like you to phone us at least a day or two before you leave, preferably Monday through Friday when the administrative office is open. When you telephone please provide the following information:
 

1) Name and address

2) phone number that you can be reached at while away

3) Emergency contact person

4) Date that you will leave and return

5) Which lights will be left on and which are on timers

6) Will anyone be going on your property while you are away?

7) Will any vehicles be left at the house?
 

You should also make sure someone will be picking up your mail and newspapers or arrange to have the mail held and the paper stopped while you are away. Have a nice trip and let us know when you return.
 

Bicycles - Parents, please remind your children to watch out for vehicles. If they see a vehicle approaching get out of the street. Please remind them to use the sidewalks and the rules of the road for bicycle riding. Children under the age of 16 years old must wear a bicycle helmet when riding their bikes, using in-line skates or riding on a skateboard. The police department does have helmets for any Landover Hills child that does not have one. To get a bicycle helmet, please call the police station at 301-773-6400 to arrange for a time to bring your child to the station to register their bike and to be fitted for a helmet.
 

The Landover Hills Police Department Tip Line:

We now have a separate phone line for anyone who has information concerning incidents or suspicious activity in Landover Hills. The phone number is 301-341-9883. Please leave a detailed message. You do not have to leave your name and number unless you want to. Since the police department cannot be everywhere, when things happen, you may see things that we don't see that we need to know about. We are asking residents to use this tip line so that we can keep Landover Hills a safe place to live.
 

LH Decals
 

Have you gotten your LH decal for your vehicles? The decals will be made available to any resident living within the incorporated area of the Town of Landover Hills. The decal will not give you special parking privileges, but it does help the police by indicating that the vehicle belongs to a Landover Hills resident. If your vehicle is ever stolen, this reflective decal will help the vehicle stand out at night for identification by the police.

The decals are absolutely free! All you need to do is to bring all your vehicle registrations to the police department. We ask that you place the decal either on your rear bumper or on your back windshield in the lower left corner. For further information call: 301-773-6400.
