PICK-UP WILL ON ITS NORMAL SCHEDULE AND BE UNAFFECTED BY THE CLOSING.

In the aftermath of Hurricane Isabel it should be noted that in general the Town of Landover Hills fared pretty well. There was some unfortunate damage to residential property, however, overall the Town of Landover Hills did not experience the damage and service disruption, to the extent that other parts of Prince George's County and jurisdictions experienced. For example, there was no power outages whatsoever in the Town of Landover Hills; whereas some other jurisdictions were without power, for in some instances, more than a week.
 

It should also be noted that there are a number of positive events taking place in the Landover Hills vicinity. There is continued development along the Annapolis Road/450 corridor; as the focus continues to shift towards the inner beltway and older community development.
 

In view of this current trend, it is increasingly necessary for Town residents to take a more active role in the development activities taking place in the Landover Hills vicinity.
 

The third Annapolis Road/450 corridor /450 corridor Community Workshop that was mentioned during the last workshop held at St. Mary's Church in Landover Hills last month, by the Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission staff; has been scheduled for Thursday, October 9, 2003 Final plans for the Annapolis Road/ 450 corridor are planned to be discussed at this workshop. However, there will be other opportunities for involvement in the planning process for the Landover Hills vicinity.
 

During the Landover Hills Town Council meeting on Monday, October 6, 2003, there was discussion of a Landover Hills Day, which will take place in the month of the Town of Landover Hills' incorporation, which is April. There will be further information regarding Landover Hills Day in the next edition of the Landover Hills Chronicle newsletter.
 

All residents are urged to support your Town and elected officials by becoming involved in the process. Attend your Town Meetings and other meetings planned for the betterment of the community.
 

The next Town Meeting will be held on Monday, October 20, 2003, at 7:30 p.m. Plan to be present and participate.

Congratulations to James and Nancy Pilkerton on the birth of their grandson Todd James Shifflett. Todd was born on August 11, 2003, at

9lbs and 21 inches long. Todd was welcomed home by his big sister Victoria Rose and his parents April and Darryll Shifflett. Our congratulations are extended to the entire Pilkerton family.

April 24, 2004 will mark the 16^th year of the Christmas in April program. Thousands of volunteers will provide home repair services to elderly and physically challenged Prince George's County homeowners on this date.
 

All the work is done of the last Saturday in April. The scope of work ranges from yard work to interior painting to replacing old appliances and installing smoke detectors. Over the past 15 years, 1387 homes have been repaired at no cost to the homeowner.
 

Applicants must be elderly or disabled, of low to moderate income and own and live in the home to be repaired. Applications are available at the Landover Hills Town Hall or by calling 301-868-0937. Applications must be received by Christmas in April by November 1, 2003 to be considered for the 2004 program.

We held our bicycle rodeo on Saturday, October 4, 2003 at the St. Mary's School parking lot. The original date of September 13^th was canceled due to rain. The 4^th turned out to be a very chilly, misty day but about 15 children and their parents braved the elements to attend. Our department received a grant from the Prince George's County Safety Task Force to purchase helmets for the rodeo. Every child in attendance received a helmet prior to their participation in the bike rodeo. They received a lecture on the rules of the road, rode their bike through a skills course, received a certificate, coloring book and bike safety brochure as well as a donut and juice. Even though the weather was not the best, everyone seemed to enjoy the morning.
 

The State of Maryland mandates that every child under the age of 16 must wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, as a passenger on a bicycle, riding on a scooter or skating on in-line skates. The helmet must meet the standards of ANSI or Snell. Wearing a helmet reduces the risk of a serious head injury by 85 percent. If you look around Town, most of the children riding bicycles are not wearing helmets.
 

The Landover Hills Police Department will be stopping children riding bicycles without helmets and they will issue them a juvenile citation. They will also go to the child's house to speak with the parents. If the child does not have a helmet, one will be given to them and the parents will be asked to sign a receipt stating that they received a helmet and their child will wear one while riding their bicycle.
 

This may seem trivial to some but a child sustaining an injury to the head from a bicycle accident can result in the child's mental capacity being diminished or they may have nerve damage that could result in paralysis.
 

Parents, please make sure your child wears their helmet, stop at stop signs, ride on the right side of the road, use their hand signals and that they have their bike registered. We will hold a Spring 2004 Bicycle Rodeo.
 

On another note, the Landover Hills Police cruisers and storage shed were broken into in September. The cruisers sustained a fair amount of damage and the loss from the storage shed was substantial. If you have heard anything that may lead to the arrest of the individuals who committed this crime, please call the Chief's confidential line and leave a message. The phone number is 301-341-9883. The smallest tip may solve the crime.
 

If you need the police, call 301-333-4000. The Landover Hills Police Department is dispatched over the Prince George's County radio system. If you call our station, the officer may not be in the station at the time and there may be a significant delay in getting to you. We do not want anyone to call and not have an officer show up. Please, this is very important. If you need the police and it is an emergency, dial 911. If it is not an emergency, call 301-333-4000. If you need to report an incident that happened and you do not need immediate service or you have a question that needs to be answered, call our station at 301-773-6400. If you have to leave a message, make sure you leave your name, phone number, date and time of the call and the reason that you called.
