.                                                             Letter From the Mayor

Now that we are well within the greatly anticipated Y2K (Year 2000), we have found that many of the events and concerns spoken of did not occur. Primarily because of the preparation and pre-planning that had occurred and mentioned in prior editions of the Landover Hills Chronicle.
 

However, there is still much to be done in the year 2000 to ensure that future needs are taken care of, particularly in the area of the Census.
 

Although Census 2000 has been spoken of in prior editions of the Chronicle, it is necessary to restate its importance to the Town of Landover Hills and our County.
 

About one week before Census Day , which will be April 1, 2000, questionnaires will be sent out to resident's homes by mail. These questionnaires will be easy to read and fill out. Questionnaires will help identify what is needed in your Town and County; such as schools, services for senior citizens, persons who are physically challenged and needs for many others.
 

All information given to the Census is kept in strictest confidence. All information received through the Census is protected by laws, and will not be divulged to anyone.
 

Please do your part and help your Town and County by answering all of the questions included on the questionnaire that will be mailed to each resident by the Census Bureau.
 

Persons interested in working for the Census as Census Takers or Crew Leaders on a temporary basis can still apply, by calling toll free 1-888-325-7733. Tests are still be administered at Landover Hills Town Hall. Call the above number for additional information.
 

Congratulations to Rowanna Swamy, Sean D. Jefferson and Wayne Churaman. These Town of Landover Hills students have been selected by the Town of Landover Hills Mayor's Scholarship Committee to receive scholarships. Keep up the good work.
 

Don't forget to come out to your Town Meeting on Tuesday, January 18, 2000 at 7:30 p.m.

Dept. Of Transportation Meeting: Mayor Walker briefed the Council on a meeting he attended at the Maryland Department of Transportation concerning proposed development at the New Carrollton Metro Station. This development would consist of a mixture of retail and commercial office space. Mayor Walker passed out information for the Council to review.

Attorney Interviews- The Mayor and Council set a date for the 2^nd set of interviews for attorneys. Interviews are set for Monday, January 10^th and Monday January 24^th. Final discussion on selection will be held on January 31, 2000.

Scholarship Committee- Mayor Walker announced that the Scholarship Committee met after last month's Council meeting. Three students ( Sean Jefferson, Rowanna Swamy and Wayne Churaman) were selected to receive scholarships.
 

Fire Dept.- Chief Norris stated that he had received a letter from the Prince George's County Fire Chief Ronald Siarnicki thanking the Landover Hills Police Department for taking part in the ceremonies surrounding the late Charles Burton's funeral.
 

Red Light Cameras- Chief Norris informed the Mayor and Council that he is still waiting for contracts to arrive from Howard County. Once they arrive, they will need to be reviewed by the Mayor and Council as well as legal counsel.
 

Building Security- The Mayor and Council discussed ways of making the building more secure. Chief Norris is going to look into getting a price for a buzzer to be installed on the inner doors to limit access to the offices.
 

Personnel Regulations- The Mayor and Council reviewed the proposed Personnel Regulations. It was agreed that at the February workshop, areas of specific concern would be discussed.
 
 

Sweetheart Sundae Social- Friday February 11, 2000 from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Vanilla Ice Cream with Valentine's Day Toppings. Bring your sweetheart, family or friends. $1.00 per person at the Town Hall. For more information call 301-773-6401.
 
 

Our condolences to the family ofMr. Willie Pender of 71^st Avenue, who passed away on December 18, 1999. Services were held at Ascension Lutheran Church on Dec. 23, 1999.
 

99^th Birthday Celebration! On December 26, 1999, an open house was held at the O'Reilly residence on 72^nd Avenue. Approximately one hundred relatives and friends attended the celebration of Mrs. Aileen O'Reilly's 99^th Birthday!
 

Congratulations to all the Landover Hills students who made the Honor Roll lists in the Washington Post and the Prince George's Gazette. Keep up the great work!

Y2K Millennium, all of the problems forecast for theNew Year. Well, we made it without all the problems expected. I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone the very best for 2000 and hope that 1999 closed on a positive side for all of you. As we proceed into this New Year, let us remember our commitment to our families and ourselves: that a peaceful and safe community is a responsibility we all must share. It is a cooperative partnership between residents, businesses, government, and the police that will maintain the foundation for a community's well being. In today's society, the well being of our community should be a matter of mutual concern to us all. In the year 2000, let us resolve to become even more involved with our community and neighbors in an effort to make our Town everything you want it to be.
 

Along this line, I would like to thank all those residents and businesses that responded to our requests for assistance throughout the year. Your Police Department is very grateful for your help, not only in aiding us in accomplishing our primary law enforcement mission, but also in the assistance and support we received that enabled us to conduct the various community activities in your Town Hall and police department.
 

A special item of importance for the residents: In the last two or three weeks, there have been four (4) incidents where raccoons have been found in the Town acting strangely and had to be either captured by Animal Control or the Police Department to be destroyed. It is very important that everyone be aware of this problem. None of these raccoons have been diagnosed as having rabies, but this is an unusual number of incidents for this area. Below are some helpful tips, which if followed, will ensure your family's health and safety.
 

If you observe an animal that is acting sick or aggressive, report it to your police department at 301-773-6400, or the Prince George's County Police Department at 301-336-8800 or Prince George's Animal Control at 301-499-8300.
 

Talk to your children about keeping away from wild or stray animals.
 

Do not leave your pets unsupervised or tied in your yard. If they come in contact with any wild animals, contact your vet in case they need a booster rabies shot.
 

Keep your trash in tightly closed containers, to keep wild animals from getting into them.
 

If you have any questions pertaining to wild animals, call your police department and we will try to answer them.
